Coffee, Copper + the Art of Love

Ex Melbournian Coffee Connoisseur to
Island hopping Java Jeweler

Born and raised just outside of Canberra Australia's capital city, my search for the best coffee beans started when I hit the public service (more than 10 years ago now). In those long grueling days coffee became a necessity to stay awake.

In a short space of time I went from dirt cheap coffees with 2 sugars and milk in throw away cups, to straight black coffee in my travel mug to save my health and the environment.

Good coffee was hard to find in Canberra back then, I found I was constantly in search of the best coffee around, made by people who know what they were doing. Now days, after the Centenary Celebration of Canberra hit, the city saw a number of hip 'n' happening roasters pop up, and of course the bearded baristas came with.

After Canberra I made the move to Melbourne and lived there for two years in a great location just near Smith Street. This spot had some of the best coffee (and food) so I didn't have to search any longer! I was spoiled for choice. Then it happened, I became a true coffee snob for sure.

Since packing up and leaving Melbourne, Iv'e been on the road for around two and a half years traveling, experiencing, adventuring whilst working online, needless to say I need A LOT of coffee! From Australia to Morocco, Mexico to the US, to spending the majority of time island hopping beautiful British Columbia. Working online on the road turned into continuing my house and pet sitting journey all over, mainly just for 3 to 4 few weeks at a time, just enough to settle a little, find the gems and I was off again, sometimes returning to repeat sits.

House and pet sitting had me hopping all over the place, and again always on the look out for the best coffee around.

This love affair with coffee had me start a collection of my most favorite beans from the best roasters and cafes around, the places you feel and see the love, the places and cafes that are really an extension of a beautiful heart, the places you can feel. These places I now call the containers of love (with the best coffees in the world of course!)

Coffee Bean Necklaces Bluhouse

Bluhouse making Moja coffee took my 1st place in BC and I began my coffee bean electroplating journey as the Java Jeweler. My first copper coffee beans and solid silver coffee beans were originally made from Moja coffee beans I got on my first visit to Blu.

The process I use is not dipping, coating or brush plating it's electroplating done properly to ensure strength and durability and to last a life time.

I drill tiny holes in the roasted beans ever so carefully and fasten little copper rings inside, then coat them with a thin varnish to capture all natural detail, then coat them in graphite ready for plating taking 5 to 8 days of painting and drying. I plate the coffee beans with recycled copper over a 6 day period, super slow to ensure they are solid and all the fine details show. I then create small molds to make the solid silver real coffee beans. Then I fall in love with them all!

All copper beans have a real coffee bean captured eternally inside. The copper used comes from recycled phone lines from my Dad's farm in New South Wales, Australia (omg so much recycled cool stuff in there to play with!) and premium grade copper off cuts from my good friends in Oakland who make some incredible things! I plate beans from Lonsdale Street Roasters Canberra, Moja Coffee Vancouver, Bowen Island Espresso Hut and Mount Maxwell Coffee on Salt Spring Island... and the list grows.
